What is postpartum depression? [Kenya]

What is postpartum depression?

Postpartum is that period just after getting a baby.

What people call fourth trimester. During this time some moms get baby blues.

Baby blues is where you feel empty inside. You're feeling sad , hopeless and all , those feelings.
It's okay for any mom to feel that during the first days.

In case this feeling goes on for at least two weeks, it might be postpartum depression.

A study from the US showed that in every seven moms, one mom gets depressed, and that's a very high number.

Can you have postpartum depression and still love you baby?

Your body and brain are just having a difficult time getting back to normal. The way everyone adjusts is different, but you are still a caring, wonderful mother.

What is the postpartum depression rate in Kenya?
Many women suffer silently from PPD due to the little emphasis placed on the emotional and psychological care with a global statistics of 10-20%; the prevalence is estimated to be higher in Africa at 10-32% with 11 and 13% reported in Kenya.

How long can you be in postpartum?

The postpartum period generally includes the first 4 to 6 weeks after birth, and many cases of PPD begin during that time. But PPD can also develop during pregnancy and up to 1 year after giving birth, so don't discount your feelings if they're happening outside of the typical postpartum period.

What is the 5 rule for postpartum?

Prepare for the 5-5-5 rule: 5 days in the bed, 5 days on the bed, 5 days near the bed. This gives you a solid two weeks of focused intentional rest. It also helps to get your priorities in order when it comes to those eager visitors.
